William Heirens was a Chicago-based burglar and arsonist who turned to murder in 1945. For him, crime was an outlet for his suppressed sexuality; he claimed to feel physically sick when he touched a woman. This aversion did not prevent him from mutilating and killing Josaphene Ross, Frances Brown and six-year-old Suzanne Degnan. The first murder probably took place as a result of being discovered whilst burgling Ross’s apartment. When he was arrested in 1946, handwriting tests linked him with a note lest at the scene of the Brown murder, which read ‘for heaven’s sake catch me before I kill more. I cannot control myself.’ Heirens claimed he was controlled by a malignant alter-ego he called George Murmab, but this did not prevent him from being sentenced to three life terms in prison.
